I was selected to the Birmingham Orthopaedic specialist registrar training program in 1995.

For super specialist training and fellowship in knee surgery I went to at the Avon Orthopaedic Centre, Bristol.  This centre is renowned for partial knee replacement surgery; pioneering works on problems relating to the patella (kneecap) and for cartilage and ligament reconstruction surgery.  Having worked there for 4 years I gained proficiency in treating a wide varity of problems affecting the knee.

I then joined the Major Trauma Unit, at Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham as a Senior Trauma Fellow in a unit dealing with injuries to the knee as well as other types of sports injuries. I gained a lot of experience in dealing with major injuries to the knee and other parts of the body.

During my training I was awarded visiting fellowships to different centres in the USA and Germany, which specialize in cartilage and ligament knee reconstruction surgery.

While working in Bristol I took time to undertake an additional degree in Orthopaedic Engineering at Cardiff University.

After completing the training at Birmingham, Bristol and Nottingham I was awarded the Certificate of Completion of Specialist training and in July 2005 was added to the GMC Specialist Register.

I was appointed as a Consultant Knee Surgeon to The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, Birmingham with a part time commitment to The Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, Birmingham in August 2005.

I work as a Consultant Knee Surgeon at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, where I undertake partial knee replacement, total knee replacement, revision knee replacement and partial knee cap replacement. I replace damaged or worn out cartilage with cartilage cells grown in a laboratory.

I am especially interested in the problems relating to the Knee cap (patella). I undertake some of the pioneering surgery for the stabilization of the patella.

Passionate about catching the problem early, I am glad act as a point of contact for referrals from The Birmingham Children’s Hospital and other local hospitals for knee problems affecting children.

At the Major Trauma Centre, Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, Birmingham I treat injuries cartilage and multi ligament injuries of the knee. For reconstructing major ligaments I often use cadaveric ligaments.

As The Queen Elizabeth Hospital is the home of the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine (RCDM) I treats cartilage and ligament injuries to soldiers and elite athletes who have very high demand on their knees.
Research and Development Profile:

I am the principal Investigator for research related to cartilage transplant surgery. I supervise research projects and work in collaboration with different centres in Europe.

I regularly teach on surgical skills courses and training programmes and as an invited faculty at different meeting.

I am the co-convener for the Birmingham Patello Femoral Instructional Course and Birmingham Patello Femoral Master Class. We run this course for consultants and knee surgeons from around the country. The focus is on the problems affecting the knee cap.

I regularly teach General Practitioners, physiotherapists, nursing staff and junior doctors.

Audit:

My work, like any other surgeon is regularly audited and reviewed by other doctors and allied professionals.

A review of my work in the NHS and Private hospital is regularly undertaken. The review relates to all aspects of patient care and forms part of the GMC’s Revalidation process.
