Mr. Ivan Spika is a New Zealand and Fellowship trained surgeon. He specialises in knee arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery, hip and knee joint replacements and surgery of the lower limb. He also provides opinion and evaluation of general orthopaedic conditions and sport injuries.

He was born in Trogir, Croatia, in the province of Dalmatia, where many New Zealanders and well known New Zealand families came from as early as the nineteenth century.

He graduated from Medical school in Belgrade and also completed a four year specialist program in orthopaedic surgery at the University of Belgrade. He also worked in Switzerland before emigrating to New Zealand in 1994.

In New Zealand he undertook post-graduate studies and completed the national New Zealand advanced orthopaedic training program. He was admitted as a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2007.

He then underwent subspecialist training in joint arthroplasty at Middlemore Hospital. He also underwent subspecialist training in knee arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery as a Fellow of the prestigious John Bartlett Melbourne Knee Fellowship in Australia where he worked with Mr. John Bartlett and Mr. Hayden Morris.

After this he travelled to Lyon, France to study under Professor Philippe Neyret, one of Europe’s leading knee surgeons, assisting his surgery and attending his consultations.

On his return to New Zealand in 2009 he gained additional experience working at Middlemore Hospital and in private practice with a senior colleague as a consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon.

Since then he has established his own private practice based at Ascot Office Park. He also consults at White Cross Accident & Emergency Clinics and for the Shorecare group.

He performs surgery at Ascot Hospital.He is married with two children and has lived in Dunedin, Invercargill and Auckland.

  1. After reading the biography of Doctor Ivan, I just found out that ways to become a doctor are very long. No wonder only a person, who is very smart and agile, can be a doctor. This is because so many stages to go through. This will increase when the doctor takes the path of specialties such as orthopedic surgery.
