Leonia Medical Associates Internal Medicine and Infectious Disease, Englewood NJ

Our team of dedicated doctors include internists, a family practitioner and infectious disease physicians.

Internal Medicine:

Internal Medicine physicians are specialists who use their clinical expertise to diagnose, treat and care for their patients with a variety of illnesses. Internists are often called upon to act as consultants for other doctors in helping solve diagnostic problems. These problems can be common or rare, simple or complex.

Internists handle chronic illnesses and situations where several different illnesses may strike at the same time. In addition, they help patients with an understanding of wellness and disease prevention. They are also trained to handle women’s health, substance abuse and mental health.

For patients seeing several different specialists, the internist will help navigate an often complex medical environment. Internists take pride in having a relationship with their patients both in the office and during hospitalizations. They help coordinate their patients’ care and manage the medical problems associated with that care.

Infectious Disease:

Infectious Disease specialists pursue further training after completion of a residency in Internal medicine. They are experts in the diagnosis, and treatment of a wide variety of infections. Our ID specialists treat the whole spectrum of infectious disorders including bacterial, viral, fungal, parasitic, and tropical diseases. Doctors Weisholtz, Kocher and Jathavedam have extensive experience treating chronic viral infections such as chronic hepatits and HIV infection.

They are experts in the diagnosis and management of common bacterial infections as well as difficult, resistant bacterial infections that may complicate hospitalization or surgery. Our ID physicians are routinely asked by other doctors to provide their expertise in treating more complicated cases of infection. Other conditions where our doctors have particular expertise include: Lyme Disease, bone and prosthetic joint infections, bacterial endocarditis (infection of heart valves), complicated pneumonias and other chronic pulmonary infections such as tuberculosis and fungal infections.

The doctors are also experienced in the treatment of infections caused by defects in immunity such low antibody levels, effects of chemotherapy and radiation, and immunosuppression caused by organ transplantation or treatment of various inflammatory diseases such as Lupus, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Crohn’s Disease and other collagen vascular diseases. As acknowledged experts in their field the doctors have been frequently recognized by various publications as among the most outstanding regional Infectious Disease specialists

What are anti-coagulants?

Anti-coagulants are medications that reduce or prevent formation of clots in blood by inhibiting the production of Vitamin K; part of the body’s clotting mechanism.

Two most commonly used anti-coagulants are heparin and warfarin.
Disease conditions requiring anti-coagulant use:

Anti-coagulants are prescribed in any of the following conditions:

    Deep vein thrombosis
    Pulmonary embolism
    Atrial fibrillation
    Stroke
    Heart attack
    Artificial heart valve
    Clotting disorders

Anti-coagulation monitoring program

An anti-coagulation treatment needs to be adequately monitored so as to provide maximum benefit to the patient without adverse side effects such as bleeding.

Anti-coagulation treatment is monitored based on the INR (International Normalized Ratio) of your blood test. INR ratio is a measure of the additional time taken for the blood to clot when oral anti-coagulantsare used. That is, if the INR ratio is 3, it means that the time taken for blood to coagulate is three times more than the normal coagulation time. The anti-coagulant dosage is unique for each individual and depends on that particular disease condition of the individual. Your physician will determine an appropriate therapeutic range for you, which will also indicate the target INR. The target INR would be halfway between the upper and lower numbers of the therapeutic range. If the blood test resultsshow an INR which exceeds the therapeutic range, the individual would be at an increased risk of bleeding. Your physician would, therefore, decrease the dosage of the anti-coagulant. On the contrary, if the INR falls below the therapeutic range, the individual would be at an increased risk of clotting.Consequently, the anti-coagulant dosage is increased by the physician.

Always rely on your physician’s advice for the anti-coagulation dosage and duration of dosage. Take the exact prescribed dosage and follow the exact prescribed duration (may be a month, a few months, or a life time) as per physician instructions.
Side Effects

Anticoagulant therapy side effects include bleeding and bruising.  Notify your doctor if you notice blood in sputum, stools, or urine; unexplained bruising, nosebleeds or bleeding gums.

Sydney Orthoptic, Your Straight Eye Clinic

Orthoptics

Working with children is a challenge task, the ability of a child to develop different or better learning skills on more than one physiological system. Most of the learning skills come through vision. In order to achieve the best result in the treatment the diagnose and the treatment should include the combination of more than one health profession.

Therefore, I would like to offer you my services as an Orthoptist.

The meaning of orthoptics is strait eyes; the orthoptics science developed 80 years ago and is base on proven research. This science involves the knowledge on visual system in different areas such as binocular vision, eye muscles balance, focus, lazy eye (amblyopia) and strabismus. The orthoptist is a trained eye practitioner, especially in children assessment and visual training. Moreover, the orthoptist involves in the management of neurological and developmental problems of visual system.

From my experience with children visual training, in order to see “the entire picture” and therefore to give the right treatment from different angles there is need to corporate between the orthoptist and the occupational training.

For  an example : a child with motor skills abnormality and unbalanced visual system will find the treatment to improve the motor skills very difficult ,as long as the child has difficulty to focus his eyes. The hand movement will follow the eye movement to the target. Moreover, children who diagnosed with visual perception abnormality will find the treatment for eye movement very difficult, only treatment for both problems at same time will bring the right result.

To conclude, I am offering you to share my knowledge, ability and experience in order to achieve the best result for the patients.

Please feel free to contact me for any question or to forward my letter to any of your colleagues and patients.

Staying Alive Program, Brisbane

This program is about advanced health risk management- knowing and managing your health risks puts you in control of your health future. We do a thorough study of your family tree, your personal history, risk factors and gene tests (if desired) to identify any disease propensities early, institute life changes to prevent/detect diseases at their earliest curable, manageable stages.

A regular preventive health check is a good idea for everyone. The RACGP red book allows certain preventive screening to be available under Medicare and your doctor will be familiar with this. Any screening above this is not Medicare refundable.

If you have not had a recent health assessment (in last 12 months) you may choose from several different types of health assessments to assess your baseline results. If you are aged between 45-49 there is a special subsidy from Medicare for this exam so notify reception when you book, of you age.

From all this combined information, we develop a personalised proactive preventive health program for you and we take advantage of every available technology to do so, keeping on top of latest research and new health innovations.

We inform you of latest research into factors that contribute to cancer, heart disease and what you can do to prevent it and detect it at an early treatable stage. Similarly, with lifestyle diseases e.g. diabetes, heart disease, high cholesterol, etc.

Corporate clients are not able to access Medicare for this service.

For those living elsewhere, Skype appointment can be made. We can send you the medical questionnaire and examinations to have with your local doctor, we can review your results and advise on your preventive health plan, plus order gene tests if desired and send you a collection kit.

These Skype appointments are not currently refundable by Medicare.

Without good health we have nothing

By proactive screening we can detect cancers and other diseases at an early stage and save your life. Take control of your future and book you’re Staying Alive appointment today. Medical science now has various methods of health screening that can detect early cancers.

Currently these are not utilised to their full potential as Medicare doesn’t fund this sort of high-level preventive screening. However we believe we should take advantage of it for our patients and make it available. The older one gets, the more one knows how important it is to have good health and to be proactive about disease prevention and early detection.

Virtually, all cancers if detected early, are curable. All cancers are genetic. Some are hereditary, and most are due to the interactions of your genes and damage caused by the environment that you expose your genes to. So, protecting your DNA is the only thing you can control.
