Mr Aniruddha Chakravarti
Aniruddha Chakravarti, Urological Surgeon

Consultant Urological Surgeon & Head of the Department of Urology and Lead Urological Cancer Clinician in the Dudley Group of Hospitals NHSFT

Senior Clinical Lecturer in Urology, University of Birmingham, UK.

Special interests

Laser surgery of the prostate, surgery for stone diseases, laparoscopic surgery (keyhole surgery) of the urinary tract, Prostate cancer diagnostics using MRI guided biopsies

Qualification/Training

Mr Aniruddha Chakravarti qualified as a medical graduate in 1990 and attained post graduate training in general surgery before embarking onto an extensive training in Urology. Amidst his twelve years of experience in General Urology, Mr Chakravarti has developed a special interest in laser surgery of the prostate, stone disease and laparoscopic management of upper urinary tract conditions. He has received intensive laparoscopy training from the European Institute of Telesurgery in Strasbourg, France, and has obtained a Diploma in Laparoscopic Surgery from the Institute and has had intensive training in laparoscopy during later part of his higher urological training.

He has also been through intensive training and has over four years of experience of using all kinds of lasers for prostatic surgery and is one of the few surgeons experienced in Holmium-YAG/Thulium laser enucleation and morcellation of prostate currently providing this service as a unique one in West Midlands.

The standard surgical treatment of Benign Prostatic enlargement causing bladder outflow obstruction leading to retention of urine or other urinary symptoms is transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP). However, relatively high morbidity associated with TURP has led to the development of a range of minimally invasive techniques, some of which use thermal energy. One such minimally invasive technique is the use of holmium: yttrium-aluminium-garnet (YAG) laser which is the only laser treatment approved by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence.

Holmium laser resection of the prostate (HoLRP) utilises the holmium laser as a precise cutting instrument to resect large pieces of prostate. Initially a bilateral bladder neck incision is made to define the margins of resection. The median and lateral lobes are then individually undermined and peeled off the prostate capsule in a retrograde direction until only a bridge of tissue remains at the bladder neck.

HoLRP is performed with a modified continuous flow resectoscope that has a circular fibre guide in the tip of the scope. An end-firing laser fibre is used as a precise cutting instrument to resect large pieces of prostate. The laser is then used to cut the resected tissue into smaller pieces before their removal.

A further evolution of the HoLRP procedure is holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP) in which the intact prostatic lobes are removed with the holmium laser and then passed into the bladder where they are cut into smaller pieces, before removal.

A primary advantage of HoLRP over other laser prostatectomy techniques is that it can rapidly create a large ‘TURP-like’ cavity by immediately removing obstructing tissue, rendering it suitable for large prostates of up to 100 grams. The coagulative ability of the holmium laser effectively seals tissue planes as the operation progresses, which makes HoLRP a relatively bloodless operation with a concomitant reduction in transfusion requirement, and also avoids the dangers of systemic fluid absorption.

Other postulated advantages include a reduced need for bladder irrigation, shorter postoperative catheterisation period and length of hospital stay, and the ability to retrieve tissue for histological examination.

Research/Publications

Mr Chakravarti has researched well and published in leading peer reviewed journals in Urology, and presented in various international meetings on the topics of laser enucleation of prostates, stone diseases and laparoscopy.

Hospital affiliations

Mr Chakravarti is a Consultant Urological Surgeon and head of the department of Urology at The Dudley Group of Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Senior Clinical Lecturer in Urology at the University of Birmingham, UK. Randy Clark, Orthopaedic Surgeon

Randy Clark is proud to return home to beautiful Southern Utah. He is a product of Dixie High School, Southern Utah University and the University of Utah School of Medicine. Ever since he was a Dixie Flyer football player inspired by his mentor Dr. Michael Anderson, he has worked toward his dream of becoming an orthopedic surgeon. His training has taken him from the football fields of Dixie High School and SUU where he was an all-region and all-American football player to study medicine and nurture his career as an orthopaedic surgeon. During his college years, he also spent two years as a missionary for the LDS church in Peru.

While at Southern Utah University, he fell in love with the most beautiful cheerleader on the squad and finally convinced Amy to be his wife. During their time in medical school, Randy was involved in Operation Smile, a community volunteer Spanish medical interpreter and performed orthopaedic biomechanical research. Due to his exposure to wonderful mentors and his motivation to excel, Randy was accepted to a top orthopedic surgery residency program at the University of Iowa, where he was fortunate to train under some of the legends of Orthopaedics.

During his five-year tenure as an orthopaedic resident he was blessed with the opportunity to care for University of Iowa Hawkeye athletes. This experience and wonderful mentors inspired him to become a sub-specialist in sports medicine. One of the greatest opportunities of Randy’s career was to complete an additional year of training in the form of a sports medicine fellowship at the world renowned Southern California Orthopaedic Institute (SCOI) with pioneers in minimally invasive shoulder, hip, knee, foot and ankle surgery. Randy had the opportunity to help care for collegiate and professional athletes, movie stars and wonderful people from all over the world. During his fellowship at SCOI he published and presented his orthopedic research, authored textbook chapters and has produced several educational surgical videos.

This fifteen-year journey away from St. George has been a wonderful experience and brought three beautiful children by the name of Cooper, Caroline and Calvin. Randy and Amy feel fortunate to return to Southern Utah with their young family. Randy especially appreciates the opportunity to bring sports medicine expertise to Southern Utah and hopes that you will provide him with the privilege of caring for you!

Mission

Provide excellent orthopedic care to the Southern Utah community with a focus on joint preservation and sports medicine.

Dr Shillingford, Gastric Sleeve, Florida

Gastric Sleeve Surgery Florida
Gastric Sleeve Surgery

Gastric Sleeve Surgery procedure works by restricting food intake without any bypass of the intestines or malabsorption. With decreased appetite and caloric intake, weight loss is achieved with the help of Gastric Sleeve, aka Sleeve Gastrectomy. The stomach is restricted by dividing it vertically, creating a small vertical stomach pouch shaped like a banana. The new stomach pouch measures 2-5 ounces. The remaining part of the stomach is removed. The portion of the stomach that is removed is thought to be responsible for secreting Ghrelin, the hormone that is responsible for appetite and hunger. By removing this portion of the stomach, the appetite hormone is reduced to almost nothing, usually causing a loss of appetite. The new stomach pouch holds only small amounts of food, causing the patient to feel full.

Dr. Shillingford performs the gastric sleeve surgery in Florida. Dr. Shillingford specializes in three kinds of bariatric surgeries in Florida: Lap Band Surgery, Gastric Bypass Surgery and Gastric Sleeve Surgery, also known as Sleeve Gastrectomy. Dr. Shillingford will listen to your concerns and weight loss goals and recommend which form of bariatric surgery is the best for you.

SPARSH Hospital, Bangalore India

In our first five years itself, we at SPARSH have achieved much that we are truly proud of. We have performed some very complex surgeries, have pushed ourselves every single day and have tried to always live up to our endeavour of touching as many lives as possible. For us at SPARSH, every day is a new day which comes with different opportunities, new challenges and the opportunity to reach out to more people.

Within a year of starting SPARSH Hospital for Accidents, Orthopaedics and Plastic and Maxillofacial Surgery and performing over a 1000 surgeries in this short span of time, we became a name that came to be associated with quality healthcare.  In 2007 we dealt with a very unique case. Prabhu was born with a foot growing out of his back. Mocked and taunted by his classmates, Prabhu grew reluctant to go to school. His future looked bleak, but his surgery at the expert hands of the SPARSH team has taken him back to school again. The success of this, gave us a name at the National level.

The next year was perhaps one that placed before India and the world a very complex case. A case which seemed very difficult, a condition that was indeed rare and a challenge that was enormous. Born with eight limbs, Lakshmi Tatma is the surviving twin of a pair of conjoined twins. Lakshmi could barely drag herself around, and she had already become an object of considerable curiosity and misguided reverence. After a 27-hour surgery by Dr. Sharan Patil and his committed team, Lakshmi’s life has changed. Today, she is a healthy, normal child. This particular case received international coverage and was truly a one of its kind case. This was a surgery not conceivable for any ordinary Hospital. We challenged the limitations of medical science and the case of Lakshmi Tatma gave hope to children with similar conditions across the country.

At SPARSH we stand for achieving Clinical Excellence with Social Relevance. Making a difference and having a larger impact on our Society at large is very fundamental to us. We want to make quality healthcare accessible to the poorer and we see this as our responsibility. In 2009 we started SPARSH Vachana which has now become an annual event where we perform surgeries for children with complex orthopaedic conditions completely free of cost. Seeing the smiles on the faces of these little ones and their families after the success of these surgeries is the greatest reward we could ask for.

The following year we decided to reach out to the elderly in our society.  We started “Guru Namana” which is again held once a week every year where we operate on teachers with orthopaedic problems, again completely free of cost. This initiative has touched the lives of many and is helping us reach out to a wide cross section of people.

We are not content with resting on our accomplishments.  Pushing the norms and challenging the status quo is what motivates us to do even better. We had always wanted to start a Hospital specifically for higher end interventions in the area of Orthopaedics, which would bring the finest talent from India and abroad and where medical care would truly be of an internationally renowned standard. SPARSH Hospital For Advanced Surgeries was inaugurated in April 2011 in Bangalore. With this new endeavour we seek to reach the zenith in our field.

We at SPARSH know we have a lot to feel proud of. In a short span of just 5 years we have achieved a tremendous amount. But we want to do more and it is this energy and zeal that makes each moment an opportunity to exceed what has already been achieved. Our story, we believe is a journey. It has no end.

Piles Treatment, Mr Abhay Chopada, London UK

Piles or haemorrhoids are swollen or enlarged blood vessels inside or around the rectum and anus.

Mr. Abhay Chopada a laparoscopic general and colorectal consultant specialises in the surgical and non-surgical treatment of piles. As one of UK’s Top Surgical Gastroenterologists, is well known for his expertise in this field.
What are Piles?

Piles or haemorrhoids are swollen or enlarged blood vessels inside or around the rectum and anus. When veins in the lining of the anus and rectum become enlarged, they are filled withexcess blood, and causethe underlying tissues to also swell, forming abnormal lumps. It occurs most commonly in individuals over 50 years of age.

Haemorrhoids are classified into two types. They include:

Internal Haemorrhoids: These are swellings that develop inside the anus. You may not be able to see or feel them. Sometimes, they may protrude through the anus to form external haemorrhoids.

External Haemorrhoids: These are swellings that develop outside the anuswhile passing stools. You may be able to see and feel them. Formations of blood clots in external haemorrhoids are called thrombosed haemorrhoids and are extremely painful.

Piles are caused due to excessive abdominal pressure from standing or sitting for long periods, being obese, pregnancy and straining during constipation. Diet plays an important role in causing and preventing piles. People who consume more processed food, and less fibre and fluids may develop piles as a result of producing hard stools and straining during bowel movements.

At Good Samaritan Hospital, the da Vinci® Surgical System provides surgeons with an alternative to both traditional open surgery and conventional laparoscopy, putting a surgeon’s hands at the controls of a state-of-the-art robotic platform. The da Vinci System enables surgeons to perform even the most complex and delicate procedures through very small incisions with unmatched precision.

Other patient benefits may include:

    Significantly less pain
    Less blood loss
    Less scarring
    Shorter recovery time
A faster return to normal daily activities
And in many cases, better clinical outcomes

Urology: Good Samaritan Hospital is one of the few hospitals in Northern California to perform laparoscopic prostatectomies (removal of the prostate) , which are less invasive and result in faster recoveries for patients with prostate cancer. We also do robotic surgery for partial or full removal of the kidney (nephrectomy).

Gynecologic Surgery: At Good Samaritan Hospital, our surgeons use advanced laparoscopy in many gynecologic procedures, including fertility and cancer surgery. In laparoscopic surgery, we use very small instruments and make tiny incisions, which means less scarring, faster healing and less pain for the patient. In fact, one of our recent surgical procedures was televised live worldwide for an international laparoscopic conference. We are glad to be able to bring such leading-edge procedures to the South Bay community so that our patients can get the expert care they need right here at home.

We currently perform these gynecologic procedures using the da Vinci Surgical System:

    Hysterectomy—removal of the uterus
Myomectomy—removal of fibroids while sparing the uterus
    Oophorectomy—removal of the ovary
Ovarian cystectomy—removal of cyst(s) from the ovary

General Surgery: At Good Samaritan Hospital, our surgeons use the da Vinci Surgical System, with the latest in surgical and robotic technologies, to perform surgery through just a few small incisions. The system is beneficial for performing routine and complex surgery. The surgeon is 100% in control of the da Vinci System, which translates his or her hand movements into smaller, more precise movements of tiny instruments inside the patient’s body.

Some common procedures we perform at Good Samaritan Hospital include:

Para-esophageal hernia repair—often recommended for someone with a large hiatal hernia and symptoms that may include gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD).
Partial colectomy—when certain parts of the colon (lower or transverse colon) must be surgically removed.
Single site cholecystectomy—removal of the gall bladder using one small incision
