Hernia Types

There are various types of hernia that can occur in both men and woman.

Inguinal Hernia is where the intestine or bladder protrudes through the abdominal wall (direct inguinal hernia) or into the inguinal canal in the groin (indirect inguinal hernia). The Inguinal hernia is most common in men (about 80% of all inguinal hernias) because of a natural weakness in this area.
Ventral Hernia is a hole in the muscles of the abdominal wall. A bulge is noticeable in the middle of the abdominal wall.
Hiatal hernia(hiatus hernia) is when the upper stomach squeezes through the hiatus, an opening in the diaphragm through which the esophagus passes.
Umbilical hernia is when part of the small intestine passes through the abdominal wall near the navel (belly button). Most common in newborns, obese women and those who have had many children
Incisional Hernia is most common in elderly or overweight people who are inactive after abdominal surgery. At the area of the previous abdominal surgery, the intestine pushes through the abdominal wall.
Femoral hernia appears as a bulge in the upper thigh. The intestine enters the canal carrying the femoral artery into the upper thigh. Most common in women, especially those who are pregnant or overweight.

As time goes on, hernias tend to enlarge and without notice can become obstructed or its blood supply cut off.  This could then become a life-threatening situation.
